Southern Indian Obs.

• 1a among Hudson's Bay Company men: a Cree, as opposed to the Chippewyans, or Northern Indians (def. la), who lived to the north and west of the Churchill River.

  • 1773  (1792)  I understand that the southern Indians never kill any whales, but either purchase whalebone from the northern tribes, or cut it out of a dead whale when they chance to meet with one, which often happens.
